Rebuilding confidence and reclaiming hope

Charity Beneficiary Laura*, Royal Navy Rating

When Laura, a former Royal Navy Rating, was referred to Sailors’ Children’s Society by SSAFA, she was struggling with her mental health and finding it difficult to manage financially. Debt had built up with utility and service providers, and by her own admission, life felt overwhelming.

Her Family Support Officer, Michelle, became a vital source of stability. Michelle supported Laura to seek specialist advice through a debt charity and encouraged her to access help for her health via her GP. She also worked to support Laura’s emotional wellbeing, arranging to meet her outside of the family home when Laura felt able to, helping to ease the social anxiety she was experiencing.

With ongoing encouragement, Laura began to engage with a range of local activities and courses. She attended craft-based sessions, completed short courses, and learned to prioritise her own wellbeing and needs. Through volunteering with veteran-based activities, Laura met staff at her local veterans and families hub — a turning point that helped her rebuild her confidence and community connections.

Financial support from Sailors’ Children’s Society helped Laura and her child through challenging times. Monthly grants provided breathing space, allowing them to afford essentials like food, heating, and clothing. Laura was also able to enjoy some precious breaks away with her child —moments that brought joy and a renewed sense of hope.

These practical supports provided the stability and reassurance Laura needed to rebuild her life. “Sailor’s Children’s Society has made a huge difference to my life. Michelle has supported me through some very challenging times. Without this support, I would not be balancing my life as well as I am now. Being able to build this relationship has guided me to do and to be better.”

Laura’s journey hasn’t been easy. After leaving the Navy, she faced years of emotional and financial turbulence, battling debt, isolation, and self-doubt. But with determination and the support of Michelle and Sailors’ Children’s Society, she’s found the strength to move forward.

‘”I left the Navy for all the wrong reasons, which had a ripple effect on my life for years. Debt, addictions, family issues, struggling as a single mum, isolating myself, pushing away people who cared and wanted to help.

The love I have for my child and my determination to be a better person and mum, and for us to have the life we deserve, were enough to get me through the messiness of my life. I would not be the person I am today if it wasn’t for Michelle and the charity. I don’t even think I would be here. I honestly do not think I could put into words how grateful I am.

Today, Laura continues to volunteer and build a more stable life for herself and her child. With the support of Michelle and Sailors’ Children’s Society, she has rediscovered her confidence, her sense of purpose, and her belief in a brighter future.
