You could qualify for support
The aim of the Sailors’ Children’s Society is to help children of seafarers who are in full-time education and families who are in severe financial difficulties. Our goal at the charity is to create a support system that will allow you to manage your current circumstances and give you the tools to create a positive future for you and your family. Our support remains in place for up to five years and is dependent on family circumstances, your means-tested benefits, an annual review, and your engagement with the team.
Financial support
We know that being in financial difficulty puts an enormous strain on families. We provide financial support for families in the form of a monthly financial grant, and regular clothing grants to help with school uniforms and seasonal clothing needs.
Family support
Our trained family support workers are there to give emotional and practical support, as well as be a friendly ear in times of need. Where possible they will visit you in your home, but if distance is an issue they will offer telephone support or video calls. Our family support team will be able to signpost you to external agencies such as SAIL or Stepchange.
Respite breaks
We proudly own 9 static caravans based in some of the UK’s most popular coastal resorts. We offer free respite breaks to the families we support. These holidays offer families a unique opportunity to spend quality time together, away from any stress and struggle they may be facing.
Families can also apply for a travel grant to help with the transport costs of the holiday.
Computer packages
We offer a complete home computer package of home computer, printer, and USB stick to the families we work with. In recent years with the spotlight on home learning this has been a crucial element of support for many families. Children in the home are able to complete home learning meaning they are not in danger of falling behind with their education.
Students in Further Education
We are able to continue support for young people past the age of 18 if they wish to attend college or university. If they are supported on the child welfare scheme they can apply for a welfare grant to help with the costs of living away from home while they study.
How to apply
If you answer yes to the three questions below then you could be eligible for support. If you or someone you know is eligible then please complete the contact form below.

If we are unable to help, we will do our best to direct you to another organisation for support. If your application is accepted we will need to see evidence of sea service and your means-tested benefits. You will then receive a welcome call from the Sailors’ Children’s Society.
Have you served at sea for at least 6 months? One of the child’s parents must have either served in the Royal or Merchant Navy or in the fishing fleets including ferries, tankers, cruise ships and cargo boats?
Do you have a child or children under the age of 18? You must be the person in receipt of child benefit.
Are you in receipt of any of the following means-tested state benefits? Housing Benefit or the Housing Element of Universal Credit. Council Tax Benefit (other than single person's 25% discount or disablement reduction)?
