Sailors’ Children’s Society is a national charity established over 200 years ago. We offer financial and emotional support to children and families from seafaring backgrounds who are in a time of crisis. We help families with connections to a range of maritime roles, including those working for the Royal Navy, the Merchant Navy, in fishing fleets, ferries, cruise ships, and cargo ships.
We have a rich history closely linked to the proud seafaring heritage of Hull, where the charity was first established in 1821. The last 200 years have seen the charity evolve from its first home on a floating chapel, ‘The Valiant’ to its current status as a national charity supporting children and families across the country.
The trustees have the role of company directors and are responsible for the governance of the Sailors’ Children’s Society. Collectively they bring professional experience from the Royal and Merchant Navy, the fishing industry, national health service, architecture, banking, social services, accountancy and law. There are 11 trustees and they meet every two months.
As a team we are united in our vision to improve the lives of disadvantaged children. We work tirelessly to ensure that children are able to achieve their full potential by offering financial, practical and emotional support to families in times of crisis.
Our corporate partners ensure that the charity can continue its vital work supporting seafarers’ families in a time of crisis. Being a Sailors’ Children’s Society corporate partner helps your company by creating access to new audiences, strengthening your reputation, brand image and values, and increasing employee loyalty.
HRH The Princess Royal’s role as patron of the Sailors’ Children’s Society holds profound significance, not only for the charity but also for the lives of the countless beneficiaries it supports. The royal patronage of HRH The Princess Royal shows her unwavering commitment to helping children and families of seafaring backgrounds. Her active involvement at royal events has helped to raise the profile of the charity and highlight its mission.
Both our principle funders and our additional funders make a huge difference to the work we do at the Sailors’ Children’s Society. Our principle funders are Greenwich Hospital, Royal Navy Royal Marines Charity, The Seafarers’ Charity and Trinity House London. Our funders help us alleviate childhood poverty and enable the children we support to have a brighter future.
We offer respite breaks to families we support. Thanks to our generous benefactors, we are able to provide grants to our families that enable them to get away from the stresses of life and bond after the crisis they have experienced. These family holidays are a unique opportunity for families to take a break together and make precious memories.
